Understanding Three Basic Photography Genres of Boudoir Photography

There are many genres or types of photography, but most of our work focuses on three basic genres: Glamour/Pin-Up, Traditional Boudoir and Fine Art Photography. It’s helpful to understand these three genres when planning your photo shoot and deciding on the right package. Below, professional model Jasmine Joon demonstrates the different qualities of these three genres:

  • 20160811-IMG_8408_AppealPhotography
  • Glamour/Pin-Up Photography
  • A glamour photo shoot is designed to bring out a model’s alluring beauty, charm and sex appeal. Glamour photos are typically brightly colored, captured in bright lighting and enhance the natural beauty of the model in a range of outfits, from fully clothed runway-style shoots to more revealing outfits or nude.

  • Traditional Boudoir Photography
  • In boudoir photography, the subject is photographed in sexually suggestive, sensual poses, usually in a home setting, such as a bedroom or living room, partially dressed, in lingerie or nude. Lighting tends to be natural and is generally softer and less brilliant than in glamour/pin-up. Boudoir photography emphasizes the aesthetic qualities and artistic craft of the photograph, as opposed to other forms of purely erotic imagery.

  • Fine Art Photography
  • Fine art nude photography is a genre of fine art photography which depicts the nude human body with an emphasis on form, composition, emotional content, and other aesthetic qualities. Erotic interest, although often present, is secondary to artistic considerations, In a typical fine art nude photography session, the model is photographed in a variety of unusual poses under unconventional lighting conditions in the studio, or in unusual settings outdoors.

Transparent Pricing

Some photography studios lure clients with low teaser rates, often as low as $99. However, prices can be vague, and once the photo shoot is over, clients may be aggressively upsold, needing to purchase their photos for thousands of dollars. We believe in transparent pricing, and all our prices are clearly listed and communicated. Most of our clients choose from the popular packages listed here, which represent the best value.

  • Special Editing: All of our packages include professional touch-up editing, which includes cropping, exposure, lighting enhancements, changes to color balance and other corrections and artistic effects. Removal of studio elements (such as stands and lights) is also included in the editing process. Touch-up editing also includes attention to skin smoothing, minor blemish removal, removal/diminution of minor scars, stretch marks, cellulite and tattoos (as requested). Touch-up editing does not include body shaping (including slimming effects) and/or other major editing tasks. We may charge an additional fee for special editing. We’ll provide you with an estimate and won’t proceed without your approval first.
  • Videos and Cinemagraphs: Short videos created from your final, edited images are available and vary in cost depending on the number of images and customization needs by the client. You can find an example on this page. Cinemagraphs, or “Living Photos” are images where a portion of the image is still and a portion of the image is in motion. You can find an example on this page and other examples in our portfolio. Cinemagraphs vary in cost based on customization needs by the client.
  • Videography Services: We do provide videography services in addition to still photography. Specific costs are quoted on a case-by-case basis.
  • Fantasy/Special Effects: You can find examples of our special effects work — including the use of green screen techniques and cinemagraphs (see above) — in the Fantasy/Cosplay/Special Effects section of our portfolio. Such work requires additional editing and post-production work and is quoted on a case-by-case basis.
  • Location Shoots: We regularly travel on assignment for our clients, including outdoor “nude in nature” shoots. Additional charges may apply to shoots that require significant travel, significant setup time, time out away from the office and expenses incurred. Costs for such shoots are quoted on a case-by-case basis.
  • Wardrobe, Lingerie: We have very limited wardrobe and props in the studio. Therefore, you are responsible for your own wardrobe. This also ensures that you absolutely love what you’re wearing and that the fit is perfect.

Additional Products & Services

  • Scheduling: We shoot 7 days a week, mornings, afternoons and evenings, however the studio is closed on Mondays, so we only provide location shoots on Mondays.
  • Makeup: Makeup is optional and not included in our package prices. We work with a wonderful independent makeup artist who is very familiar with our work and is masterful in creating the best makeup styles for boudoir photography, generally a nude/natural look. She likes to work with clients ahead of time to make sure she understands your preferences, etc. That way she’s all set for you when you arrive. We have a large, well-lit makeup station. Of course, you’re welcome to do your own makeup, have your makeup done by an artist of your choice prior to your arrival, or have them do your makeup at the studio. Please consult our article, Choosing the Right Makeup for Your Boudoir Shoot for additional information and advice on makeup for your photo shoot.
  • Photo Books and Other Printed Products: The Gallery Session includes a hard cover photo book. Our website offers details about customized photo books, and information about other printed products, including prints, framed prints, posters, standouts, etc., can be found here.
  • Additional Images: Each of our sessions includes a number of finely-edited images. Additional images from your photo shoot can be ordered — see the pricing table above for cost information.
  • Share a Shoot: At times two or more of our clients share a shoot. Each participant would be photographed during the same session and divide the time between/among them as they wished. Similarly, the total edited images would be divided between/among them. Both individuals would be photographed during the single session. (Note that this is distinct from a Couples Boudoir shoot.)
